Studies on Information and Communications Technologies

The effects of ICT in developing countries.

This page reunites observations on how ICTs help developing countries, with case studies and comments on latest happenings. As an interesting example, the chart below was built with a selection of countries in order to illustrate the relation between the investments on ICT's and the success they achieved in increasing Internet penetration (data from the World Bank and from ITU (International Telecommunications Union)).

To reach the level of penetration seen in rich countries, less developed ones need to increase investments beyond world average. That was the case of Korea (Rep.) and Malasia.

More on this topic can be seen in my latest article, a new piece entitled “The challenge of the digital divide in Brazil. Why Brazil needs broadband Internet and what to do to achieve it (2010) ” and available in the Articles section .
